Welcome to oxmunch

The thesis is this: there are plenty of restaurants in Oxford, but not too many good ones.

Oxmunch’s reviews aim to help your eating out experience by finding the tasty needles in the disgusting haystack.

You’ll find here a long summary of what is available detailing the best or most well-known of what’s available in the middle of the city.

Restaurant reviews otherwise by category.

Good hunting and let us know where you think we’ve gone right or wrong by using the comments section in each post.

Olives £ (3.5/5)

Sandwich Bar. 42 High Street, OX1 4AP, 01865 245700; 8am-7pm, Mon-Sat.

Olives only just about has a remit above gastro-shop-without-portfolio, given that it sells posh olive oil and balsamic vinegar alongside tins of cassoulet and french pastries. In fact most of its trade comes from the students pouring out of their lectures in the Examination Schools across the road at lunchtime. But the sandwiches are the best available in the centre. Partly this is to do with the quality of the cured meats sold here, partly because the bread is better quality; also because there’s always an inventive baguette du jour: on my visit, salami, artichokes, feta, sundried tomatoes.
